The specialised research library of renowned Shiʿa expert Heinz Halm (Emeritus, University of
Tübingen) focuses on Islamic historiography, with special emphasis on Shiʿism, Ismailism, Sufism, and
other Islamic sects/denominations.
SHIʿISM AND ISMAILISM form the largest part of this collection. Around 85 titles deal with Twelver
Shiʿism, from classical sources (Ibn Bābawayh’s Man lā yaḥḍuruhu al-faqīh in four volumes, al-Ṭūsī’s
Fihrist and Riǧāl, al-Najāshī, al-Mufīd, a facsimile of a rare manuscript of Nahj al-balāġa) to studies of
Khomeini and the Islamic Revolution. About 65 titles cover Ismailism: the Fatimid-era texts edited by
Muṣṭafā Ġālib, al-Qāḍī al-Nuʿmān’s Daʿāʿim al-Islām and Taʿwīl al-daʿāʿim, Daftary’s reference works,
the Institute of Ismaili Studies series, and two rival editions of the Kitāb al-Ṣirāṭ. The Zaydī, Druze,
Alawite and Ibadi minorities are covered in depth.
CHRONICLES AND HISTORIOGRAPHY are the library’s second great strength, with more than
60 titles. They include de Goeje’s complete Leiden edition of al-Ṭabarī’s Annales (15 volumes, 1879–1901).
Other multi-volume sets are al-Masʿūdī’s Murūǧ aḏ-ḍahab (7 volumes, Beirut 1966–79), Ibn Khallikān’s
Wafayāt al-aʿyān (6 volumes, Cairo 1948–49), al-Subkī’s Ṭabaqāt al-Shāfiʿiyya (8 volumes, Cairo 1964–71)
and al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī’s Tārīkh Baghdād (14 volumes). Mamluk and Ayyubid sources, and Guest’s al-
Kindī.
THEOLOGY, PHILOSOPHY AND LAW are well represented. The Brethren of Purity (Ikhwān al-
Ṣafāʾ) appear in a Dār Ṣādir Beirut edition and a nearly complete of the Oxford/IIS critical series. The
library also holds 16 works by Josef van Ess, including Theologie und Gesellschaft.
