HISTORY OF MEDICINE is the most important subject. Examples are three Göttingen Academy volumes on the Arabic Dioscorides tradition, each with the Arabic text and an annotated German translation: the anonymous Dioscurides triumphans, Ibn al-Bayṭār’s Dioskurides-Erklärung and Die Ergänzung Ibn Ğulğul’s. Ibn al-Jazzār’s Zād al-musāfir is present in three critical editions: Book 6, Book 7, chapters 1 to 6, and Books III to V. Two Cairo editions are based on the only two known manuscripts: al-Ġāfiqī’s Muntaḫab, fascicles II to IV (1937 to 1940), and the treatise on the eye ascribed to Ḥunayn (1928). Dols, The Black Death in the Middle East, Ullmann, Islamic medicine, and Weisser’s study of conception, heredity and prenatal development are also included.
MATHEMATICS AND ASTRONOMY are the second prominent theme. Al-Bīrūnī’s Istiḫrāǧ alawtār deals with the chords of the circle; al-Karaǧī’s Kitāb al-Badīʿ fī l-ḥisāb is edited from a Vatican manuscript with a French introduction. Works on astronomy include Nallino’s ʿIlm al-falak, the history of Arabic astronomy in the Middle Ages (Rome 1911), Strohmaier’s Die Sterne des Abd ar-Rahman as-Sufi on the Book of Fixed Stars, with colour illustrations from the Gotha manuscript, and the Persian Risāla-ī dar iṯbāt-i hayʾat-i ǧadīd on the new astronomy.
PHILOSOPHY is centred on the Arabic reception of Aristotle. Averroes is the largest group with eleven entries, among them Bouyges’s edition of the Long Commentary on the Metaphysics in three volumes with the Notice, the Talḫīṣ kitāb al-Maqūlāt (Beirut 1932) and the Epitome in Physicorum libros. Avicenna is represented by the Šifāʾ volume on physics and Bertolacci’s study of its Metaphysics. Al- Kindī’s Kitāb al-Kindī ilā l-Muʿtaṣim bi-llāh fī l-falsafa al-ūlā (Cairo 1948), Hans Daiber’s Aetius Arabus and Vagelpohl on Aristotle’s Rhetoric complete the picture.
