Over a period of 30 years more than 250 scholars have contributed to the largest cartographical project on the Near and Middle East ever.

The Atlas covers the Near and Middle East from the European parts of Turkey down to Sudan, from the Arab Peninsula up to Central Asia.

Part A, Geography & Cultural Anthropology, covers the geography of the Middle East, as well as climate, geology, settlement, religion and economy.

Part B, History, covers all periods of history from the Stone Age, the Romans, the Expansion of Islam and the Crusades up to the times of Imperialism and Decolonization.

The cartographic material can be accessed using the three index volumes.

The Portfolio Edition was exclusively developed for the specific demands of university and public libraries. The 295 single sheets of the Atlas are placed in acid-free plastic sleeves and stored in seven user-friendly port- folios. The single maps can be easily accessed through a ring-binding mechanism and are well-protected against dust and damage. They can be taken out of the Portfolio individually.

The overall size of a portfolio is 66 x 78 x 4 cm. The ideal storage system for frequently used maps.
