This wide-ranging collection of portraits and figure studies of the period brings together photographs by both anonymous studios and renowned photographers such as Zangaki and Bonfils. It provides a vivid overview of the people of the region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including individual portraits, occupational types, and group scenes. Men, women, and children are depicted in a variety of traditional garments and social settings, reflecting the cultural diversity of the region.
The photographs include both studio portraits and carefully composed outdoor scenes. Together they illustrate contemporary ethnographic interests as well as the developing photographic industry catering to travelers and collectors of the time.
As a group, the photographs document dress, posture, and social representation, while also reflecting the aesthetic conventions of early Orientalist photography. The collection offers valuable visual insight into everyday life and the photographic practices of the region during the period.
The collection is conservationally processed for archival purposes and is stored in PAT material (photographic activity tested):
